ATRA Climate Explorer - Application for researching the impact of climate change on the herpetofauna of BiH

18 Sep 2024

As part of the application for the Ebbe Nielsen challenge award, our honorary member Mirza Čengić designed a web application that provides insight into the impact of climate change on the herpetofauna of BiH. The application is very intuitive and easy to use.

It is a Shiny application that allows users to explore the distribution data of herpetofauna from Bosnia and Herzegovina that are stored in the GBIF database (the world's leading database on biodiversity). Thanks to the app, this distributional data is now linked to climate information relating to 19 bioclimatic variables describing aspects of temperature and precipitation. More precisely, for each geographic coordinate where the species of interest is recorded, the temperature and precipitation values for the years: 2011-2040 are attached; 2041-2070; 2071-2100 under three different scenarios predicting climate change (SSP126, SSP370, SSP585).

ATRA Climate Explorer is a tool that is extremely important for the biodiversity of Bosnia and Herzegovina because it enables the identification of the most threatened species from climate change and the prioritization of research and monitoring programs. As such, the application is unique and very original and follows the latest world standards. Thanks to the instructions given in the tab 'How to build your own', users access the git hub platform where a code is given that enables the reproduction of the same application for the desired territory (eg Croatia).

You can access the Shiny application here.
